Walking with André

André will lead you along secret paths where you will discover the beauty of nature in this spectacular and varied region of France, untouched by mass tourism.

There are many paths from Aumessas which lead along the hillsides covered in chestnut trees, past ancient terraces, rock formations and waterfalls and up to tiny, hidden hamlets.
Higher up, the many secluded paths of the Cévennes National Park offer evidence of a variety of wildlife (pole cats, deer, roe-deer and wild boar) or take you to the banks of the picturesque `Lac du Pises.`

If you prefer a more challenging walk, climb 1200 metres to the summit of Mount Aigoual where you will have panoramic views (you`ll see the Alps and the Pyrenees on a clear day!) and you can visit the weather station and café. A four hour ascent, known locally as `the four thousand steps`

Not far from Aumessas, amongst the limestone plateaux, marvel at the `Cirque de Navacelles,` a spectacular `canyon` plunging down to the village of `Navacelles` which is partly built into the rock and is surrounded by an ancient river. A little higher visit the well preserved `Moulin de la Foux` a water mill, which was driven by a fast flowing torrent. Built in the eighteenth century, it has been recently restored. Enjoy a picnic in a secluded spot by the river…

Visit many interesting sites along the mountain paths like the cave formed by the river `Bonheur` disappearing underground where you can examine dinosaur footprints, or walk along the platform of paths circling the `Orgon` waterfalls in an area with dramatic geological features. The changing seasons offers opportunities to walk accompanied by bird-song and to study a rich assortment of wild flowers in spring. Sample a range of wild fruits in summer and swim in natural, cool river pools.

In Autumn hear the mating call of the stags (le brâme du cerf) or pick mushrooms; the region is renowned for `cêpes,` and you can eat them later!  In winter walk with snow shoes on untrodden snow amongst the prints of many animals and birds. Marvel at the snowy scenery and warm up afterwards with a glass of mulled wine!
Whatever you choose, you are guaranteed a walk to remember!
